- Use cloth shopping bags - The EPA estimates that somewhere between 500 billion and a trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide each year. Watch this amazing slideshow to see how much this impacts the world. (Once in the slideshow, use the bar on the right side of the screen to scroll through.)
- Free Drinking Water Well Testing - In cooperation with the Michigan Department of Agriculture (MDA) and Michigan State University, the Michigan Groundwater Stewardship Program (MGSP) will be sponsoring free drinking water well screenings. For residents interested in having their drinking water samples tested free, there will be several drop-off sites in the four county area, where they can bring in water samples that will be taken to Lansing for testing. The testing supplies are in and ready for pick up. More Info.
- Battery Recycling - As of June 6th, Mason County residents will again be able to safely and conveniently recycle their household batteries at no cost, at collection sites around town. AFFEW (A Few Friends of the Environment) has received program funding to operate its popular battery recycling program through mid 2011, which pays the recycling expenses of up to two tons of batteries per year!
Four collection points will be offered for household dry cell batteries: the Scottville and Ludington libraries, West Shore Community College and Briggs Hardware. AFFEW volunteers will take filled collection buckets to a shipping point at Padnos Iron and Metal, and from this site the batteries will be trucked to Battery Solutions in Brighton, Michigan for recycling into rebar steels and raw materials for industrial products.
